The Swedish Air Force will not host its traditional “Flygdagen” open day and airshow in 2025 as the Nordic air arm gathers steam for its centenary celebrations the following summer.
The two-day, free-to-attend Flygdag event is traditionally held each August, rotating around Sweden’s main air base’s. However, the show will skip a year in 2025, returning on the 22nd-23rd August 2026 as the culmination of the air force’s 100th anniversary events. It will be held at Malmen in Linköping, home of the Swedish Air Force’s flight school, museum, and the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing. The latter unit has been tasked with staging the Jubilee edition of Flygdagen.
It is the first time that Flygdagen has been held at Linköping since the 90th anniversary airshow in 2016, which welcomed 130,000 visitors.
Colonel Mats Antonson, head of the Helicopter Wing, said: “It feels very gratifying to organize the Jubilee Flight Days in a place where flying is a natural part of everyday life and has been so since the aviation baron Carl Cederström established flying in the city back in 1911. We are extra motivated because we were forced to cancel the 2023 Flight Day which would have took place at Malmen.”
The 2023 edition was cancelled due to security concerns due to the tense political situation in Europe at the time.
Other events marking the centenary will include Veterans Day at Gärdet in Stockholm on the 29th May, Almedal Week in Visby on the 23rd-26th June and an official centenary commemoration in Stockholm on the 1st July.
