San Javier launches AIRE 25, billed as “most important” airshow in Europe

San Javier in Murcia, Spain, has launched AIRE 25, a one-off airshow due to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Patrulla Águila.

Scheduled for the 14th-15th June 2025, the airshow will bring together a large number of major military aerobatic teams, with Patrulla Águila themselves and their Swiss counterparts, Patrouille Suisse, already announcing their intention to take part. Spain’s helicopter display team, Patrulla Aspa, are also due to participate, while the Frecce Tricolori, Patrouille de France and various solo fast jets appear in promotional material.

In a presentation at FITUR 2025, also known as the Madrid International Tourism Fair, San Javier’s Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, said the airshow will be “the most important in Europe” and will feature “the best aerobatic teams in the world.”

San Javier is the home of Spain’s national aerobatic team, Patrulla Águila, which was formed in 1985 as part of the Academia General del Aire (AGA). The AGA, along with the City of San Javier, are jointly responsible for running June’s airshow.

Organisers expect an audience in excess of 500,000 people. It appears that the flying display itself will be held over the beaches of Santiago de la Ribera, adjacent to San Javier air base. Some previous airshows in San Javier have also featured a static display at the air base itself, although the precise format and location of AIRE 25 is yet to be confirmed.

This will be the third edition of AIRE. The first was held in San Javier in 2006, and remains the biggest airshow ever held in Spain. A second edition of AIRE was held in Torrejón, near Madrid, in 2014, marking the Spanish Air Force’s 75th anniversary. The following year, the AGA held other major airshows in San Javier (albeit not under the AIRE brand) to mark the 30th anniversary of the Patrulla Águila, with several foreign jet aerobatic teams present. A similar airshow was held at San Javier in 2018 to mark the base’s 75th anniversary.

Commencing in 2024, the city of San Javier also supported a civilian-run airshow in Santiago de la Ribera, known as the Festival Aéreo San Javier (FASJ). This was a smaller event with more limited foreign military participation and no static display. Local press reported that FASJ would return on the 2nd-4th May 2025, but organisers have since refuted this, saying that FASJ will take a year out to accomodate the much larger AIRE 25 show. They intend to revive FASJ in May 2026.
